Kenshiro Teraji vacates Light Flyweight titles, turns focus to the Flyweight division

0 1
Back in June Nicaraguan media reported that a deal had been reached to crown a new WBC Flyweight champion, with their fighter, and former champion, Cristofer Rosales (37-6, 22) set to take on unified Light Flyweight champion Kenshiro Teraji (23-1, 14) [寺地 拳四朗]. Today that fight took a step towards being confirmed with Kenshiro announcing that he has vacated both the WBA and WBC Light Flyweight titles, and was officially moving up in weight.

The now former champion explained his move and stated "I've decided to relinquish my titles and move up to the flyweight class. I've decided to move up a weight class with the goal of winning two weight classes and unifying with four organizations, which I wasn't able to do at the light flyweight class. I'm currently working on getting my body in shape for the flyweight class and creating a new style. Please look forward to the new Terachi Kenshiro at the flyweight class!"

The move makes the report of a Teraji Vs Rosales fight look more likely, and we’re expecting an announcement of that fight later in the year, with the bout expected in the Winter.

The move really opens up the Light Flyweight division, which also has a title vacancy with the WBO and only has a single champion, IBF title holder Sivenathi Nontshinga (13-1, 10). It’s expected that Shokichi Iwata (13-1, 10) will be one of the men fighting for one of the vacant titles in the not too distant future as the division goes through some huge changes, after Kenshiro’s long reign in and around the top of the division.
