Martinez eyes potential Tanaka bout after Ioka

0 5
This coming weekend we’ll see a fantastic match up, at Super Flyweight, as WBA "super" champion Kazuto Ioka (31-2-1, 16) [井岡一翔] takes on IBF champion Fernando Daniel Martinez (16-0, 9) in Tokyo.

Today, ahead of that bout, Martinez took part in a press conference and media work out.

The unbeaten Argentinian, sporting blue and Green hair, similar in style to Argentinian soccer team Boca Juniors, seemed completely at ease and relaxed, and seemed to enjoy the focus he was getting.

He spoke about meeting Mike Tyson whilst training for the fight in Las Vegas, getting Tyson to sign his IBF title, and made it clear he didn’t just want the IBF belt, but instead wanted all 4 of the titles at Super Flyweight, including the WBA title held by Ioka.

In preparation for the bout he told the press "I've been training hard, so I'm in very good condition. This fight is important to me. I've been waiting for this chance for a long time. I won't miss it." He also seemed his trainer is hoping that Ioka sticks to his statement of meeting Martinez at mid-range, with trainer Rodrigo Calabrese stating "Maybe he's just trying to deceive us. If he comes at me in close combat, that would be better. Ioka is a good defender, but there is no perfect defense."

Regarding his future plans, if he gets past Ioka, Martinez made it clear he was going to look to become a 3-title champion stating "I want to fight Bam, but I also want to fight Tanaka because I like Japan. I want to fight whoever offers the best fight money,", alluding to fights with either WBC champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez or WBO champion Kosei Tanaka (20-1, 11) [田中恒成], who will himself be defending his title on July 20th.

As for the actual work out Martinez jumped rope in a good mood with Latin music playing and then did a round each of punching a punching bag, shadow boxing, pad punching, and punching a punching ball.
