Hearn: ‘Everyone knows’ Canelo-Jacobs should be next

Eddie Hearn says he and DAZN are going to push hard for Canelo Alvarez to face Daniel Jacobs on May 4.

After Canelo Alvarez’s one-sided rout of Rocky Fielding last night in his debut on DAZN, attention now turns to his next fight on May 4, when he is likely to return to the middleweight division.

And despite Oscar De La Hoya saying earlier this week that Canelo won’t fight Daniel Jacobs on that date, Eddie Hearn is still looking to push for that to be next.

On Canelo-Rocky

“(Fielding) was outclassed, ultimately. It’s different levels between a world class fighter and an elite fighter. He tried, he got up continuously, and in the end, the ref called it off. So it was a good win for Canelo and now we look to see what happens in the future.”

On trying to make Canelo-Daniel Jacobs next

“It’s the best fight in the middleweight division. You’ve got Danny Jacobs who had a fight with Gennady Golovkin, very close, many people thought he won that fight. He’s now world champon, that’s a unification fight, it’s a real middleweight matchup. That’s the one that myself, Keith Connolly, DAZN, everyone is pushing for for Cinco de Mayo.”

“Danny’s a very respectful guy. He wants the fight. They both said to each other, ‘We respect each other, let’s go.’ We’ve got to negotiate and Danny’s got to make sure he gets a great deal, he’s a world champion, but he wants that fight. He wants that fight over everything else. He doesn’t want an easy defense. He wants to jump straight into the Canelo fight.”

“I think it’s just going to come down to the deal. I believe everyone knows this should be the next fight. But obviously there’s a deal to be done as well. We don’t want to be difficult, we want respect, but we want that fight.”

On Callum Smith being possible for Canelo

“Callum Smith, he’s gonna be boxing in the summer. I think the guys at DAZN want a Danny Jacobs fight right now. I think that’s the natural fight.”
