Mayweather on Khabib’s post-fight brawl: ‘It’s gonna be a huge fine’

Floyd Mayweather gives his take on what will happen to Khabib Nurmagomedov following his UFC 229 post-fight trip into the crowd to engage Dillon Danis.

Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather has had a unique take on MMA for a while now. From pretending he doesn’t know anything about it, to suddenly caring when a boxing match with Conor McGregor became a possibility, to actually talking about competing in the sport, he’s come a long way. But it’s still Floyd - he says a lot of things just for the sake of saying them.

Still though, when asked about the UFC 229 post-fight fracas that involved Khabib Nurmagomedov going into the crowd to attack Dillon Danis, he did offer an interesting viewpoint. Floyd has a ton of experience with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and has been involved in a somewhat similar incident in the past - namely, an in-ring brawl near the end of his 2006 fight with Zab Judah.

Here’s what Floyd had to say in an interview with ITB:

“McGregor was fighting. I’m not too familiar with the guy he was fighting. But I know that the guy he was facing was undefeated. McGregor, he’s a tough competitor, but from what I heard was, the guy, after the fight, McGregor’s opponent jumped out the ring, and was fighting people in the crowd.

”So, very unprofessional. It’s gonna be a huge fine. Pretty sure. Because, with my fight with Zab Judah, (there) was a huge melee in the ring. There was a huge penalty, a huge fine. If I’m not mistaken, seven figures. Not to me - but it could have been to Zab Judah, or my uncle Roger (Mayweather), or even Leonard Ellerbe. So I know, with a guy jumping out the cage into the audience and fighting different people, the fine is gonna be crazy.”

For reference, Judah hit Floyd with a low blow and a blatant shot to the back of the head with seconds left in the 10th round of their fight in Vegas. An incensed Roger Mayweather entered the ring and tried to attack Judah. Yoel Judah, Zab’s father, entered the ring as well and struck Roger. Then everything went bonkers and the ring filled with people. After order was restored (and Roger was booted from the arena), Mayweather took the last two rounds and the victory.

The outcome of that wasn’t quite what Mayweather stated, but the fines were big. Zab Judah got a $250,000 fine, Yoel Judah a $100,000 fine, and Leonard Ellerbe received a $50,000 fine. Roger Mayweather was fined $200,000.

Obviously from what Floyd is saying here, he didn’t actually watch what happened at UFC 229. And Mayweather doesn’t address McGregor’s own actions in the cage, where he brawled with members of Khabib’s entourage. But he’s probably not wrong here - NSAC is known for trying to get as much money as possible out of these situations, so it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Khabib get an astronomical fine for his actions in Vegas on October 6th.

I guess we’ll find out on October 24th, when the commission decides the fate of both Khabib and Conor.
