Report: Lesnar signs short extension with WWE, still planning UFC return

Brock Lesnar will continue on with pro wrestling for the time being, but could very well be in the Octagon at some point as well.

Brock Lesnar has once again pushed himself into a situation where he could go one way or the other. The current WWE superstar was apparently supposed to have completed his contract with the pro wrestling organization after his WrestleMania match with Roman Reigns on Sunday and a UFC return was expected, but then a curious thing happened - Lesnar won. He’s still the Universal champion.

So how does that work?

Well, early on Monday the WWE announced that Lesnar had signed “re-signed with WWE” and will compete in a rematch with Reigns in Saudi Arabia later this month. Many took that to be the end of any talk of returning to the UFC, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

According to multiple sources including MMA Fighting’s Dave Meltzer, it looks like Lesnar has just signed a short-term deal with the WWE - one that could involve as little as two matches. And that he is still planning an Octagon return, possibly against the winner of the Stipe Miocic vs. Daniel Cormier superfight that goes down in July. His WWE contract will allow him to compete in at least one UFC fight, according to Meltzer.

UFC president Dana White was asked about that possibility by the media multiple times around UFC 223 and was coy about it, but it is certainly on the table.

There is the USADA issue still on the table for Lesnar though. He is currently not in the USADA testing pool and has around five months left on his suspension from UFC 200 because he retired and pulled out of the testing halfway through. So even if he re-entered the pool tomorrow, he’d have to wait a while before he could fight.

In the meantime, Lesnar will defend his WWE belt against Reigns on April 27th, and my guess would be that he has a SummerSlam match with the recently re-signed Bobby Lashley. But who knows at this point.
