Hunter Woodhall breaks Americas record, qualifies for World Championships
WALNUT, California – Arkansas alum Hunter Woodhall is among 30 athletes named to Team USA for the 2024 World Para Athletics Championships, which will be held in Kobe, Japan, this May.
Woodhall broke the 100m T62 Americas record while competing at the U.S. Paralympics Track & Field National Championships this past weekend at Hilmer Lodge Stadium on the Mt. San Antonio College campus.
Producing a time of 11.00 seconds (2.0 wind) bettered the Americas record of 11.04 set by Woodhall in 2021. Contesting the 400m for the first time this season, Woodhall also won the T62 category with a time of 48.04 to collect a second U.S. title on the weekend.
“I’m just so happy,” Woodhall said. “It’s so validating. It was a hard lesson to learn at worlds, but it was something I needed, and to see the outcome of that today was just so validating. It means the world to have my team here supporting me, it’s what the sport’s all about and makes the moment so special.”
An equipment malfunction during last summer’s World Championships in Paris, France, prevented Woodhall from competing in the 400m.
The 2024 World Para Athletics Championships will be held May 17-25. They were originally supposed to take place in 2021 before the COVID-19 pandemic postponed the Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.
The U.S. team is building toward an unprecedented schedule in 2024, with World Championships leading into the 2024 U.S. Paralympics Team Trials (July 18-21) followed by the Paralympic Games Paris 2024 (August 30 to September 7).
