ACB JJ 9 World Grand Prix results - Pena and Mendes take titles

Augusto Mendes and Felipe Pena respectively won the 60 and 95 kilogram championships at ACB 9.

High-level grappling was on full display across the world on Friday and Saturday. In Moscow, Russia the Absolute Championship Berkut Jiu Jitsu promotion put on the ACB JJ 9 World Grand Prix, featuring some of the best athletes in the 60 and 95 kilogram divisions. Two ADCC medalists came out on top of their respective tournaments, as Felipe Pena and Augusto Mendes took home the championship belts.

Pena made his way through a very tough draw before reaching the final to face Abdurakhman Bilarov. In the final, Pena and Bilarov were both aggressive as they exchanged positions multiple times. In the third round a scramble would result in both men standing up. Bilarov attempted to shoot in on a takedown without a proper setup, and Pena made him pay for the error. Pena locked in a guillotine choke and Bilarov attempted to scramble to his back. Unfortunately for him Pena ended up on top and coaxed the submission to take home the title. To get to the final Pena defeated Lucas Barbosa and Gutemberg Pereira.

Mendes had a tougher route to the title, but found a way to pull out the victory. In the finals Mendes and Samir Chantre put on a display of great Jiu Jitsu as they exchanged attack for attack. In what could be considered a precursor to the 90 kilogram final, Chantre attempted a double leg but Mendes caught onto his neck and dropped to his back with a tight guillotine choke. Chantre rolled to his back but that didn’t help the situation as Mendes got the tap in the fifth round of their matchup. Mendes defeated Milton Bastos and Joao Miyao to reach the final.

The event also featured two super fights as Darragh O’Conaill defeated Leonid Gatovsky and Alex Cabanes defeated Ali Magomedov.
