Can the Americans get their summer off to a strong start?

The USMNT has a busy summer ahead of it, getting underway on Saturday. Before getting into competitive matches, the Americans play one friendly, against Venezuela in Utah.

March’s World Cup qualifiers were fairly successful for the Americans, who got three points from a must-win home game against Honduras before snagging a point away to Panama. They absolutely need a win at home against Trinidad and Tobago next week before going away to face Mexico.

This will be Bruce Arena’s last chance to get a look at some new faces before competitive matches. And the game against Venezuela will not only be a chance for those players to win key roles for upcoming World Cup qualifiers, but for July’s Gold Cup as well.

The United States is missing a handful of players through injury. Jermaine Jones, Sebastian Lletget and Timothy Chandler were all unavailable for selection for Arena. Their absences mean Kellyn Acosta and DeAndre Yedlin could have big opportunities in this game. Venezuela has opted for a young squad, with nearly half their team 23 years old or younger and some of their top players left at home.
