Atlético Madrid vs. Real Madrid live blog: Scores and highlights for Champions League semifinal
Los Merengues have a huge lead and one foot in the Champions League final.
FINAL SCORE — Atlético Madrid 2-1 Real Madrid (2-4 aggregate)
For the fourth consecutive year, Real knocks their local rivals out of the Champions League. Los Merengues will face off against Juventus in the final.
Here’s a recap of Real Madrid’s Champions League semifinal triumph over Atlético Madrid.
88’ — Isco gets an early rest, with Alvaro Morata replacing him.
77’ — Atléti has also introduced Angel Correa in place of Koke, and he sets up a couple of half chances quickly that his team can’t convert.
76’ — Two changes for Real Madrid. Casemiro and Karim Benzema are off for Marco Asensio and Lucas Vazquez.
74’ — Best chance of the half for Real. Marcelo crosses for Benzema, it looks like his header is heading for the back of the net, but it’s just wide.
66’ — Atléti with their best attack of the half, but they’re denied by some excellent goalkeeping. Keylor Navas makes a double save, first on Yannick Ferreira Carrasco, then on Gameiro off the rebound.
56’ — Two subs for Atléti. Fernando Torres and Jose Maria Gimenez are off for Kevin Gameiro and Thomas Partey.
49’ — Isco with a very hard challenge on Gimenez. No card.
46’ — And we’re back, no changes for either team. A red card seems likely.
HALFTIME — Atlético Madrid 2-1 Real Madrid (2-4 aggregate)
Since Atléti is unlikely to win the next half 3-0, it’ll probably just descend into UFC.
45’ — Fernando Torres backs into Keylor Navas, clearly intending to make contact with the Real goalkeeper. It was a dirty play.
42’ — GOAL! Atlético Madrid 2-1 Real Madrid (4-2 aggregate). And suddenly this isn’t close anymore. Karim Benzema sets up the chance with a cross to Toni Kroos, who is denied by Jan Oblak. But Isco pounces on the rebound and scores, giving his team a crucial away goal. Atléti now needs to score three times.
Cannot overstate how bad Atléti’s defense screwed this up.

37’ — Gabi gets a yellow for dissent after he asks the referee to give Isco a yellow card. It seems unlikely that this match ends 11 vs. 11.
33’ — This is getting nasty. The referee has let some hard tackles go, and that’s led to escalation by the players. Diego Godin smashes through the back of Cristiano Ronaldo during an aerial challenge, and eventually gets a yellow card. Sergio Ramos also gets one for dissent.
25’ — Not sure if Atléti just know they couldn’t keep up that level of pressure for the entire game or what, but they’ve dropped into a low block after dominating Madrid with a more aggressive style for the first 15 minutes.
Cannot let energy level/focus drop - Atlético must stay locked in.

I don't know why Atleti are sitting back. they had Madrid on the ropes pressing high, now they're just letting them back into the game.

22’ — Giving up two goals has woken up Real Madrid. They’re finally stringing more than three passes together at a time and controlling the ball in Atléti’s half.
16’ — GOAL! Atlético Madrid 2-0 Real Madrid (2-3 aggregate). And suddenly, this tie is wide open. Antoine Griezmann converts from the spot and now the Rojiblancos are only one goal behind. Real Madrid appeared to have an insurmountable lead and it’s already been chipped away at.
15’ — PENALTY! Atléti has a spot kick after Raphael Varane fouls Fernando Torres!
Here's another look at the foul that led to Griezmann's penalty. Not the best PK, but Atletico will take it. #UCL https://t.co/0z4czzexCp

12’ — GOAL! Atlético Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid (1-3 aggregate). Well, it’s not over yet. Saul turns in a corner from Koke. The Calderon goes bonkers. One down, two to go.
Saul Niguez got Atletico's comeback effort started with this header. Will Real hold on? #UCL https://t.co/rl8SvoGqXJ

5’ — Keylor Navas barely turns a shot by Koke behind for a corner. Fernando Torres barely misses scoring from the subsequent set piece. 30 seconds later, Stefan Savic gets a yellow for a nasty tackle. Jan Oblak has to make a save on a header by Casemiro off that set piece. End-to-end stuff.
By the way, this was the tifo from Atléti fans before the match:

4’ — Danilo gets a yellow for hitting Felipe Luis in the face with a high boot. Real hasn’t started well at all.
2’ — And Atléti seems inspired by the crowd. They’re pressing very aggressively, and Antoine Griezmann shoots over after his team wins a turnover.
1’ — Kickoff! Atléti fans don’t care that their team has almost no chance, they’re in full voice. A factor in that might be that this is the last Champions League game at the Vicente Calderon. The Rojiblancos open their new stadium next season.
Barring a catastrophic collapse, Real Madrid will knock their rivals Atlético Madrid out of the UEFA Champions League for the fourth consecutive season. Los Merengues won 3-0 in the first leg of their semifinal, so they’re very heavy favorites heading into Wednesday’s game. An away goal for Real at the Vicente Calderon would effectively end the tie.
Atléti is out of the Copa del Rey, while they can’t finish higher than third in La Liga, and look nearly assured of finishing no lower than that as well. This could be the last meaningful game of Los Rojiblancos’ season, then, and their fans will hope it’s not the end of an era. Manager Diego Simeone is linked to other jobs every summer, while Antoine Griezmann is expected to make a big money move during the next transfer window.
You might not see anything resembling this version of Atlético Madrid ever again, so enjoy them while you can.
