Tall Black No. 307: International Edge, Championship Intent
Fresh off his debut with the New Zealand Tall Blacks, Keanu Rasmussen, is returning to the Big Barrel Hawks. His elevation to the national stage capped a significant 12 months.
Rasmussen featured in New Zealand’s gritty win over the Philippines in Manila before delivering a breakout second performance against Guam, drilling a corner three for his first international points and finishing with 14 in a commanding 99–67 victory. His 14 point performance for the Tall Blacks in just his second international appearance demonstrated growing offensive confidence to match his trademark competitiveness.
Rasmussen’s debut NBL season with the Hawks in 2024 was incredibly promising, he was dominant until a concussion sidelined him for the better part of a month. Since last playing in Hawke’s Bay he has gone on to having an MVP season in NBL1 Central, averaging 23.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 2.0 steals, and winning a championship with the West Adelaide Bearcats in 2025. Rasmussen, currently with the Adelaide 36ers in the Australian NBL, will join the Big Barrel Hawks at the conclusion of their season. The 36ers begin their playoff campaign on Tuesday March 10th.
General Manager Jarrod Kenny said Rasmussen’s growth aligns directly with the standards the club is setting for 2026. “When you walk into the Tall Blacks environment, there’s no grey area. You play with pride, you defend, you execute and you win. Keanu didn’t just earn a debut, he made an impact. That speaks volumes about the level his game is at right now.”
Off the court, 2025 also marked a defining personal milestone for Rasmussen with the birth of his son. Fatherhood, he says, has sharpened his perspective and drive. “Becoming a dad changes everything. It gives you purpose. I want to compete at the highest level and win, not just for myself, but for my family.”
Head Coach Will Lopez believes Rasmussen’s recent experiences add another competitive layer to the Hawks’ backcourt. “International basketball exposes weaknesses quickly. Keanu handled it, competed and made plays. He’s returning sharper, more composed and ready to help us win games.”
Rasmussen is bringing international experience, professional growth and a renewed edge to Hawke’s Bay as the club builds toward a championship driven 2026 season.
