Former College Basketball Player Admits To Point Shaving

0 22

One of the athletes implicated in an NCAA probe on illegal sports betting has confirmed his involvement. During Tuesday's episode of ABC's "Good Morning America," former University of New Orleans guard Cedquavious Hunter admitted to shaving points during games.

Hunter explained that he was brought into the scheme by an unnamed bettor who operated out of Los Angeles. "I was money hungry," Hunter said, noting that he was looking for "fast cash."

The former player said that he and his teammates would miss shots on purpose during games to affect point spreads. Hunter said that he and his fellow teammates were extremely successful at pulling off the proper spread, as "95% (of the time) we got the job done."

Several Players Implicated in NCAA Probe

Hunter was one of 13 former players from six schools who were identified as part of the gambling investigation. He was also one of the six players to be banned from the NCAA for life for "betting-related game manipulation and/or student-athletes providing information to known bettors."

Dyquavian Short and Jamond Vincent, fellow UNO players, were also banned for life.

"I told them (NCAA investigators) I didn't know anything but the whole time, I knew everything. But I was trying to lie because I thought I would get my way out of it," Hunter told reporter Will Reeve.

"I just had a child, so the school wasn't paying me money, so I was trying to get money to actually take care of my child."

The NCAA said last month that it is investigating at least 30 current or former players on gambling allegations, and that the allegations levied against the New Orleans players surfaced after the organization received a tip about games being manipulated.

Hunter's admission comes as the NCAA is prepared to decide on a proposed rule change that would allow college athletes to bet on pro sports.

Two-thirds of Division I schools - 241 of a possible 361 - must submit paperwork to the NCAA to petition the decision before Friday in order to stop it.

NCAA To Potentially Allow Bets on Pro Sports

“This change recognizes the realities of today’s sports environment without compromising our commitment to protecting the integrity of college competition or the well-being of student-athletes,’’ said Slippery Rock athletic director Roberta Page in an NCAA statement.

After gambling scandals rocked the NBA and Major League Baseball in recent weeks, some of the largest names in college sports are speaking out.

“On behalf of our universities, I write to urge action by the NCAA Division I Board of Directors to rescind this change and reaffirm the Association’s commitment to maintaining strong standards that keep college participants separated from sports wagering at every level,’’ said SEC commissioner Greg Sankey in a letter to NCAA president Charlie Baker.

As the conversation around college athletes and betting continues, we'll see how teams and players respond - including players who have been implicated like Hunter.
