Air Canada makes the 'difficult decision' to cut about 400 management jobs: reports

0 23

Air Canada has cut around 400 management positions, or 1 per cent of its workforce, according to reports.

The airline said Thursday that it had made the cuts, Reuters reported.

A spokesperson confirmed the cuts to CTV News and CBC News . “As a global company, Air Canada regularly reviews its resources and processes to ensure they are optimized to efficiently support business operations and its customers,” said spokesperson Christophe Hennebelle to CTV.

He told CBC that the flights would not impact day-to-day operations and said the “difficult decision” was made after an extensive review.

The airline will be presenting its earnings on Nov. 5.

U.S. customs preclearance coming to Billy Bishop airport, Air Canada says

Before the airline released information about job cuts on Thursday, it said it would be expanding its services at Toronto’s downtown airport, Billy Bishop.

There will be U.S. Customs preclearance available in the spring, which will allow Canadian travellers to clear U.S. customs before they depart.

“Made possible next year by our new U.S. Customs and Border Protection Preclearance facility, we will offer more destinations within reach, further strengthening our role in connecting communities and driving economic growth across Ontario and Canada,” said CEO of Nieuport Aviation Jennifer Quinn.

Also in the spring, Air Canada will be offering new daily routes to New York, Boston, Washington and Chicago. It will increase daily flights to Montreal and Ottawa.

Air Canada flight attendants went on strike in August

Over the summer, Air Canada was forced to ground hundreds of planes after its flight attendants went on strike.

The union that represents the airline’s 10,000 flight attendants said they wanted increased wages and wanted to be paid for “ground work” — unpaid work that flight attendants do while the plane is not in the air.

The strike resulted in an estimated 500,000 cancelled flights for customers, the airline said.

Both sides reached a tentative deal, bringing an end to the strike after four days. The airline agreed to salary increases and created a pay structure for ground work .
