YouTube Gold: Comically Bad Free Throws

DENVER, CO – MARCH 27: Golden State Warriors forward Rick Barry #24 shoots his distinctive, underhand free throw during an NBA basketball game against the Denver Nuggets at McNichols Arena on March 27, 1977 in Denver, Colorado. At the time of his retirement in 1980, Barry was the most accurate free-throw shooter in NBA history. Seriously, watch this later on the 4th, especially if you’re going to have a beer.

In a podcast a few years ago, Rick Barry unloaded on Wilt Chamberlain for his dreadful free throw shooting. He said he could have taught Chamberlain to shoot at least 70 percent - but it would require him shooting his free throws underhanded in the way that Barry did.

Wilt took 11,862 during his career, making 6,057. That means he left 5,805 points behind.

For his career, Chamberlain was just a 51.1 percent free throw shooter and, along with Shaquille O’ Neal, has an (earned) reputation as a dreadful free throw shooter.

However, there is a difference between being bad statistically and becoming the butt of a joke, and a lot of the guys in this video, inevitably, became the butts of jokes. How could they not?

When you see some of the free throw attempts here, they will amaze you, not least of all the guy who ended up with his shot behind him.

Even among the guys who got closer to the rim, there are some real howlers here. Maybe Barry could still help some of them. This is surreal.
