Mason Gillis Starts His Pro Career In Belgium
And it looks like a solid opportunity for the former Blue Devil
Here’s some cool news: Duke’s super sub Mason Gillis will continue his career in Europe: he’ll be playing with Hubo Limburg United, team out of Belgium.
It seems to be a solidly run and ambitious team, all of which is good. There are also several Americans on the team:
- Javion Ogunyemi (Siena)
- Jaren Holmes (St. Bonaventure)
- Cliff Hammonds (Clemson)
- Nick Muszyński (Belmont)
We had forgotten about Hammonds, but he’s had a bit of a basketball odyssey overseas and is now 39. Playing that long is pretty impressive.
As for Gillis, it looks like a good situation personally. Hammonds is still starting but as noted, he’s 39 and obviously a younger player would be good. In other words, there’s a natural path for Gillis to build a role there. The team also said this in their comments after signing him:
“Hubo Limburg United is proud to announce the arrival of (Mason Gillis) as the newest reinforcement for the coming season. With his flair, dedication, and scoring ability from a distance, Gillis fits perfectly into the philosophy of Hubo Limburg United. The club is convinced that he will play an important role for the club and looks forward to his contribution on and off the (court).”
We only got to see him for a year, but he seems like a good guy and a great presence on a team. He’ll be an asset for HLU.
