YouTube Gold: A Love Letter To Dr. J
This is a fun sports documentary if you have the time to watch.
Most of us are familiar with Julius Erving if only by reputation. He had a relatively short ABA career before moving to the NBA when the leagues merged. And in the NBA, unlike the ABA, he was on TV on a regular basis.
In the ABA though, there was no TV and that’s a shame because Erving couldn’t dunk in college due to the rules at the time, and he went nuts for a few years.
And of course in the NBA he became a beloved figure, elegant, classy and universally respected (still is).
However, there is a lot more to the Julius Erving story. In this documentary, we get a glimpse at his childhood and his gradual realization that he was supremely talented. We also get a glimpse of two terrible tragedies that rocked his life.
Aside from that, we get some insight into his spectacular early years with Philly when the team imploded in the 1977 finals against Portland.
It’s a fun look at a legend with a bunch of stuff most of you never heard of. It’s worth your time.
