YouTube Gold: Young Patrick Ewing
At Georgetown, Ewing was a nearly revolutionary figure
It’s impossible in 2025 to understand the impact Patrick Ewing had on college basketball in the early to mid 1980’s.
At 7-0, Ewing was a profoundly athletic big man who could run the court like very few men his size have ever been able to do.
He was also an unbelievable shot blocker who could break a team because first he would block the shot, then he would beat everyone down court for a powerful dunk.
And despite playing in an era that also featured Virginia’s Ralph Samson and Houston’s Hakeem Olajuwon, Ewing was by far the dominant big man in college.
Not that there was anything wrong with Ewing’s offense, as you’ll see but his brilliance on defense and running the court was like no one else. He also had a bit of a mean streak and enjoyed crushing his opponents. He really was one of one when he was at Georgetown.
