Michelle Obama Reveals Why She Made Barack Stop Playing Basketball
With the NBA playoffs currently in action, Michelle Obama shared a pretty wild story about the time Barack Obama suffered an injury on the hardwood.
Earlier this year, the former first lady launched a podcast with her brother, Craig Robinson. Their show, "IMO With Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson," covers questions about everyday life, relationships and trending topics in the world. They've already had a few notable guests on, such as Keke Palmer and Tracee Ellis Ross.
On the latest episode of her podcast, Michelle Obama revealed that Barack Obama's lip got busted open during a pickup game of basketball. From that moment forward, she made the former president hang up his basketball sneakers.
"I made Barack put his basketball shoes up once he got his lip busted when he was in the White House playing a pickup game," Michelle Obama told her brother. "I don't think many people realized this because he was definitely in shape, athletic. And I remember—because you were at that pickup game."
Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States, ultimately needed stitches to repair his wounded lip.
"I mean, his lip was—I saw it. He took the thing away and I was like, 'Oh, your lip!' And he had some major speech," Michelle Obama continued. "This was probably Saturday. He had some major speech on Monday, and I was, like, 'This is what I'm saying. You know, you're playing like you're 10 and now your lip is split.' So we digress."
For what it's worth, former White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs confirmed in 2010 that Barack Obama received 12 stitches due to the injury he suffered on the hardwood.
"After being inadvertently hit with an opposing player's elbow in the lip while playing basketball with friends and family, the president received 12 stitches today administered by the White House medical unit," Gibbs said. "They were done in the doctor's office located on the ground floor of the White House."
