Cha-ching.

When the Golden State Warriors first started to make a run at disgruntled star Jimmy Butler, they quickly ran into a roadblock: Butler was, reportedly, unwilling to sign an extension with the Warriors. The six-time All-Star and five-time All-NBA selection’s contract with the Miami Heat included a player option for the 2025-26 season, and word was that Butler was hoping to opt-out of that final year and sign an extension. Except word was also that Butler was unwilling to do so with the Dubs. Reports went so far as to suggest the deal was almost fully off the table.

So much for that. The Warriors pivoted back to Butler on Wednesday, after realizing that Kevin Durant had no interest in returning to the Bay Area. And on Wednesday night, they agreed to a five-team deal in which they gave up Andrew Wiggins, Dennis Schröder, Kyle Anderson, Lindy Waters III, and a protected first-round pick in exchange for Butler.

Butler who, apparently, is willing to sign an extension.

Shortly after the news broke of the deal, ESPN’s Shams Charania and Brian Windhorst reported that Butler and the Warriors had agreed to a two-year, $121 million extension. That includes the opt-out year, so the new deal will run through the 2026-27 season.

And with that, the Warriors got their second star to pair with Steph Curry, not just for the remainder of this season, but for the remainder of Curry’s contract as well. Whatever your feelings about the trade, that certainly makes it a lot better.
