Kyle Williams' Super 25 high school girls basketball rankings for Jan. 19
The first day of the Coach Kipp Hoopsfest tournament was Saturday.
Lyons defeated St. Charles East 72-62 in one of the most high-profile games of the day. Stanford commit Nora Ezike scored 29 points in the Lions’ victory, continuing a strong stretch for her that included a school-record 40 points at the Montini Christmas Tournament.
Lyons has racked up seven victories in a row since losing to Benet in December.
In the other high-profile matchup, Benet beat Prospect 58-40. Senior guard Aria Mazza scored 17 points to lead the Redwings, and junior forward Emma Briggs added 11.
Mazza has been one of the biggest risers in the area throughout the first half of the season. She’s a dynamic shooter who rarely goes cold. Her ability to create shots will give Benet its biggest edge in the state playoffs. Shooters and creators are at a premium the deeper a team goes in the playoffs.
Other notable performances
Though Lyons vs. St. Charles East and Benet vs. Prospect were the two high-profile games, there were other notable performances from the first day of the Coach Kipp Hoopsfest.
Lake Zurich beat Glenbrook South 61-41. The Titans’ Gina Davorija, a DePaul commit, scored 28 points in a losing cause. She’s one of the best scorers in the area and the best player on Glenbrook South.
Senior guard Molly Friesen led the Bears with 18 points. It was an important victory for Lake Zurich, which has struggled to close games this season. Getting a good victory against a good opponent adds to the Bears’ résumé.
Nazareth beat York 56-34. Junior forward Stella Sakalas continued her strong season with a 17-point performance.
McDonald’s All-American nominations
Ten girls from Illinois were nominated to the All-American game: Fremd guard Ella Todd, Loyola guard Aubrey Galvan, Young guard Destiny Jackson, Lake Zurich guard Avery Cooper, Example Academy guard Noelani Dunn, Alton forward Jarius Powers, Example Academy guard Roxy White, Example Academy forward Adrena Gordon, Alton guard Kiyoko Proctor and Ezike.
Monday matchups
The last day of the Coach Kipp Hoopsfest is Monday. Here is a preview of the two most intriguing matchups:
• Peoria Notre Dame vs. St. Ignatius, 12:15 p.m.
The Fighting Irish, the Class 2A state champions last season, will travel to Chicago to face the Wolfpack.
Guard Emy Wardle, who made the game-winning shot in the state-championship game as a freshman, is one of Peoria Notre Dame’s leaders. This game will be a good test for St. Ignatius, which is led by senior forward Reganne Reardon.
• Fremd vs. Loyola, 3:45 p.m.
This game features two of the best teams in Class 4A. The Ramblers, the reigning Class 4A state champions, haven’t been as potent as they were last season, but they still can be dangerous. Todd gives the Vikings a chance.
