Prep basketball roundup: Redwood, MC heading for MCAL showdown

Semetri Carr lit up the scoreboard with 27 points as Redwood High continues to battle for the MCAL lead with Friday’s 62-43 home victory over Terra Linda.

Brennan Woodley added nine points for the Giants 11-4, 3-0 MCAL), while Noah Tanaka and Owen Shawn chipped in six points each. Redwood and Marin Catholic (10-10, 3-0) are the only two remaining teams undefeated in league play.

Sophomore center Evan Brewster led the Trojans (13-4, 2-1 MCAL) with 17 points and Shauwn Sharpe scored 10 for Terra Linda in its first league loss.

  • Jake Ryan posted a double-double as Marin Catholic beat San Rafael, 82-70, Friday night. Ryan scored a game-high 29 points and had 11 rebounds, while teammate Oliver Myers had 11 points and six rebounds. Joe Hammond finished with 11 points, three rebounds, four assists and three steals. Luke Shapiro and Gio Brovelli powered the Bulldogs (13-6, 0-2 MCAL), with 28 points and 24 points, respectively.
  • Sam Newmeyer came through in the clutch for Tam High during a back-andpforth 48-41 victory over Novato on Friday. Newmeyer scored 12 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter. Taeden Wong added nine points for the Red-tailed Hawks (4-12, 1-2 MCAL) and Andrew Ismailer had eight points. Novato (5-10, 0-2 MCAL) will try to get its first league win Tuesday against San Rafael.
  • Grayson Rothbart ledMarin Academy with 20 points as the Wildcats pulled out a 70-61 victory over Urban on Friday. Kai Ho added 19 points and Noah Hirson had 14 for the undermanned Wildcats (9-9, 1-2 BCL).

Girls basketball

Claire Hannan’s double-double powered Novato to 50-46 overtime victory over Tam on Friday night. The win snapped a decade-long drought against Tam, as the last time Novato beat Tam was Jan. 4, 2013.

Hannan stole the ball with 4.5 seconds left in regulation and tipped it to Sara Delgado, who found herself wide open in the paint for the game-tying basket at the buzzer to force overtime.

Hannan rang up 18 points and 11 rebounds, as well as eight steals as she narrowly missed a triple-double. Ariana Plascencia had 17 points, three steals and four steals for the Hornets (10-7, 1-1 MCAL), and Delgado finished with 11 points, six rebounds and four steals.

  • Jocelyn Gigounas scored 22 points to lead Marin Catholic past San Rafael 68-31 on Friday night. Sienna Frazier added 14 points and freshman Simone Claxton had 11 points for the Wildcats (11-7, 3-0 MCAL). Roselyn Mazariegos led San Rafael (3-11, 0-3 MCAL) with 11 points. Jennifer Armas added seven points, while Jessica Vara had five.
  • Redwood rolled past Terra Linda, 85-25, on Friday night as the Giants celebrated a career milestone for head coach Zack Borello, who earlier in the week earned his 100th career win. Brooke Denler scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Giants (11-8, 3-0 MCAL), who have a much-anticipated showdown with Marin Catholic on Tuesday. The Trojans (5-14, 1-3 MCAL) will take on Archie Williams in a Tuesday road game.
  • Alexia Schwaegler scored a team-high 23 points to lead Marin Academy past Convent, 73-33, on Friday. Schwaegler also had six steals and six rebounds in a well-rounded game. Freshman guard Penelope Lee had 14 points and six steals for the Wildcats (10-6, 2-1 BCL), while Sterling Colpitts and Amelia Thomas chipped in 10 points each.
