YouTube Gold: Defensive Highlights Of The 1985 Chicago Bears

0 9
Football: Chicago Bears Mike Singletary (50) in action, defense vs Green Bay Packers QB Lynn Dickey (12) at Lambeau Field. Green Bay, WI12/4/1983 | Set Number: X29398 TK2 R5 F24

Truly an astounding defense

The 1985 Chicago Bears were something else again. That team had a little bit of everything: one of the greatest running backs of all time in Walter Payton. A quarterback in Jim McMahon with an apparent death wish. A larger-than-life rookie in 318 lb. William Perry who would occasionally come in at fullback when the Bears were a few feet from the end zone. A head coach in Mike Ditka and a defensive coordinator in Buddy Ryan who couldn’t stand each other.

Most of all though that team had a defense for the ages.

Da Bears, as they became known partly due to a Saturday Night Live skit, were the most intimidating defense in the modern history of the NFL.

The Bears would adjust, swarm, and obliterate. In the Super Bowl that year, you could almost see the New England Patriots anticipating pain. You could also sense the immense confidence of the Bears as they went in for the kill. There’s never been another defense like it.

The NFL will not allow an embed of this video so please hit the link above.

Bonus: you can’t talk about that team without talking about the completely ridiculous Super Bowl Shuffle.
