Prep basketball roundup: Archie Williams beats San Domenico in dramatic Red Brown title showdown
Archie Williams took home the 58th Red Brown Tournament crown on the Peregrine Falcons’ home court with a hard-fought 53-45 overtime win over San Domenico.
In a back and forth game, the Panthers clawed out a 26-21 lead by halftime. The Falcons (5-3) evened things up in the third and the teams traded baskets the rest of the way. San Domenico’s Gavin Early hit a pair of free throws with a minute left to tie the game at 43-43. Early, an all-tournament pick, finished with 27 points.
Archie Williams junior Alex Hamblet knocked down a 3-pointer early in overtime to put the Falcons ahead for good. Hamblet grabbed 10 rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
All-tournament selection Brian Wright led the Falcons with 20 points, three rebounds and two blocks, and tournament MVP Ephraim Sohn finished with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists.
San Domenico (6-2) has a NorCal Finals rematch with Athenian on Friday, while Archie Williams gears up for the Bambauer Tournament at Marin Catholic.
Tam was a 52-47 loser to Miramonte at the Red Brown Tournament, despite a fourth-quarter rally.
- San Rafael won the REIBT crown in dominating fashion Saturday with a 83-42 victory over host Healdsburg in the finals. Tournament MVP Gio Brovelli and running mate Luke Shapiro combined to outscore Healdsburg. Brovelli scored 23 of his 26 points in the first half, and Shapiro put up 22 points, five rebounds and four assists. Will Healy, named the tournament’s Best Defensive Player, pulled in 13 rebounds. Anthony Tajbakhsh added 12 points and Thomas Hellyer had 11 for the Bulldogs (11-2).
- Junior Grant Means and senior Rio Seiler both hit double-digit scoring as San Marin beat Napa, 62-47, to capture third place at the Rose City Tournament in Santa Rosa on Saturday. Means finished with 25 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Seiler had 19 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Both were all-tournament selections. THe Mustangs’ Miller Morgan grabbed seven rebounds, and senior Zack Farbstein had a balanced game with seven points and five rebounds.
- Marin Academy rolled to a 23-point lead in the first quarter then held on for a 60-34 victory over Bay on Saturday.
Girls basketball
Maya Saibel and Kitty White combined to counter Stanford-bound star Carly Amborn as Redwood beat San Domenico 71-47 in Saturday’s matchup of Marin powers. Saibel led Redwood with 18 points and Kitty White added 12 points. Amborn turned in a game-high 26 points to lead five Panther scorers against a tough Redwood defense.
