The Cavaliers are ending training camp with one spot open.

The Cleveland Cavaliers announced on Saturday evening that they are waiving four players at the close of camp. Those players are Pete Nance, Jules Bernard, Zhaire Smith, and Jacob Gilyard. All four, along with Elijah Hughes who was briefly signed and waived, are expected to spend this season with the Cleveland Charge.

This leaves 14 players on the Cavs active roster to go along with three players on two-way deals.

Players currently under contract

  • Darius Garland
  • Donovan Mitchell
  • Jarrett Allen
  • Caris LeVert
  • Max Strus
  • Evan Mobley
  • Isaac Okoro
  • Georges Niang
  • Dean Wade
  • Jaylon Tyson
  • Ty Jerome
  • Sam Merrill
  • Tristan Thompson
  • Craig Porter, Jr.

Players on two-way contracts

  • Emoni Bates
  • Luke Travers
  • JT Thor

As has been the case the past few years, the Cavs will enter the season with one roster spot open. That extra opening has remained that way until after the trade deadline the past two seasons. In both instances, the Cavaliers filled the final spot with players who were previously bought out. That could happen again this season if Cleveland doesn’t make a trade before the deadline.

The only player who was on the standard roster at this time last season and isn’t now is Ricky Rubio. Tyson is the lone new name on the standard roster. Emoni Bates is the only two-way contract player who was with Cleveland last season.

The Cavs will begin their season on the road on Wednesday, Oct. 23 against the Toronto Raptors. Their home opener is on Friday, Oct. 25 against their former head coach J.B. Bickerstaff and his Detroit Pistons.
