Shenendehowa's Kevin Huerter wins Mr. New York State Basketball award

Shenendehowa boys' basketball coach Tony Dzikas described senior point guard Kevin Huerter in December this way: He is a high school superstar with no selfishness in him.

Wednesday, the ultimate "team-first" guy landed the state's highest basketball individual honor as Huerter was named Mr. New York State Basketball by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York.

The 6-foot-6 standout, who is headed to play next at Maryland, became just the second Section II boys' basketball player named Mr. Basketball.

Several of the past winners of Mr. New York State Basketball (established in 1986) went to star at major Division I schools and some of them enjoyed extended careers in the NBA — among them Stephon Marbury, Elton Brand, Jamal Mashburn and Kenny Anderson.

Huerter became the fourth boys' basketball player in school history to surpass the 1,000-point plateau Dec. 11 when he produced 21 points, 18 rebounds and seven assists in a 65-49 victory against Guilderland.

The senior is shooting 52 percent from the field (65 percent on two-point field goals and 43 percent on 3-pointers) and 84 percent at the foul line.
