Evan Fournier sounds off on France's game plan

After three quarters, Franz Wagner and Dennis Schroder had scored more points than the entire French national team combined (47 vs. 46). In the end, both of them finished the game with 26 points each. “When you play them badly, it’s very hard, obviously,” Fournier told Yoann Ohnona from L’Equipe about stopping the two German stars. “You can’t let their two best players score half the points. It’s impossible. When we play, they don’t let the best players express themselves. They were better in their execution, they imposed their style of play, and what they wanted to do on us.”

More on this storyline

French national team head coach Vincent Collet held a press conference after the conclusion of the group stage before the team traveled from Lille to Paris for the playoffs. The veteran specialist singled out Fournier and claimed he was the only one on the roster thinking that way. “Evan Fournier is not [with] the group. This is a regrettable and unacceptable statement for which he bears responsibility. I won’t make any further comments, but I think the group is on board [with the game plan],” he said via Yann Ohnona from L’Equipe. -via BasketNews / August 3, 2024
“I think we lack fundamentals. We have to move on. At times, I think we get it wrong in the way we want to play. And we pay the price for that. These days, the best defense is offense. It’s no longer the game of the 1990s or 2000s where you could defend half-court. Offense is essential,” Fournier said. “Balance on the court, transition game. Especially when you play a team as strong in transition as Germany is.” -via BasketNews / August 3, 2024
