The Lakers took Dalton Knecht in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft and JJ Redick is already a big fan of his newest sharpshooter.

The Lakers had only one pick in the first round at No. 17 and went with Dalton Knecht of Tennessee.

Knecht wasn't expected to be available, as he was projected as a lottery pick, but he fell to the Lakers and the organization made the smart move of picking the best player available.

Following the draft, the Lakers received universal praise for this selection. Experts loved the pick and vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka said the Lakers view Knecht as a player who can “make a real impact” next season.

According to ESPN, Lakers head coach JJ Redick is among those who love the selection.

New Lakers coach JJ Redick is a huge fan of this pick, a team source told ESPN, as he has been preaching the importance of adding shooting to the roster, not a surprise considering Redick made over 2,000 NBA 3s in his career at a 41% clip.

“None of us thought he’d be there. It’s crazy. The most ready guy in the draft, ready to play right away,” the team source said.

The vibes are expected to be good on draft night, but it's still reassuring to hear so many positives from inside and outside the organizations and from experts who understand this draft class.

Knecht appears to be a perfect modern player and someone Redick could help excel.

As a senior, he shot 39.7% from 3-point range and if his elite shooting translates to the NBA, it will open up the floor and provide the Lakers with a bonafide shooter. This is something this franchise is constantly lacking and fans desperately desire.

It sounds like Redick's excitement inspired him to start drawing up plays just like he would on his “Mind The Game” podcast. He is already fantasizing about how he could get his rookie some open looks next year.

None of us have seen Redicks' NBA coaching strategy, but we know he has the mental aspect down. As a good NBA shooter himself, there's plenty of reason for optimism that he can bring out the best in Knecht.
