Charles Schwab Challenge: 3 storylines to watch, round 3 tee times

Three developing stories to watch and the tee times for Moving Day of the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Coming off the wild PGA Championship week, the PGA Tour is at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, for the Charles Schwab Challenge. The first two rounds have been completed, and a cut has been made.

However, a $9.1 million purse and a chance to win a vintage 1975 Stingray car are still up for grabs for those who made the weekend.

A week after a major can be brutal for some players, and this list of guys felt it after two days in Fort Worth. However, there are still plenty of other storylines to watch heading into Moving Day at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Could Scottie Scheffler pull off a miracle for 5th win of 2024?

The No. 1 player in the world, Scottie Scheffler, struggled on Colonial Country Club’s greens but quickly found his stride. Despite still dealing with the PGA Championship situation, the new dad pushed the outside noise aside.

He posted a 5-under 65 on Friday, seven shots better than his Thursday 2-over 72.

His chip-in for par on 18 was huge because it kept him bogey-free and boosted the Texas native's momentum.

Scheffler is at 2-under for the tournament but is still within reach of his fifth PGA Tour win of the season. Davis Riley went low on Friday and leads the field by two shots, and Scheffler trails by seven strokes.

Despite that deficit, he is still the odds-out favorite to win the event.

The 10-time PGA Tour winner has a slight chance of winning this week, but anything is possible. He needs another low round on Day 3 and for the other guys to struggle. If Scheffler can get within reach, he could pull off a miracle after last week’s crazy situation.

Jordan Spieth continues to be hot and cold

Jordan Spieth started his second round red hot. He made five birdies in his first six holes. He hit a different stride, as many were shocked to see him play that well. However, it did not last.

After those five birdies, Spieth went ice cold on his second nine. He coughed up two shots at the par 3 4th and par 3 8th to sign for a 3-under 67. The three-time major winner sits at 2-under in the tournament after he went 71-67.

While he safely made the cut, many thought Spieth would be in contention after Friday’s round. Instead, the dad of two has work to do to earn his 14th career PGA Tour win.

Charles Schwab Challenge sees a close leaderboard at midway point

Riley leads at 10-under after he fired off a bogey-free 6-under 64 on Friday. The 27-year-old is eying his first solo PGA Tour win after he and Nick Hardy won the Zurich Classic last year.

However, he will have to keep the pedal down as the leaderboard in Fort Worth, TX., is tight. Hayden Buckley is the closest to Riley at 8-under, but Sungjae Im and Keegan Bradley sit at 6-under. There is a seven-way tie at 5-under, including Tony Finau, Brian Harman and Sepp Straka.

While a 4-5 shot lead is strong, it is still a close leaderboard with how the weather is in Texas. The swirling wind could really affect guys the next two days, so that lead may not last.
