Earlier this season, talking to @azcentral, Kevin Durant asked this question about his place in the GOAT conversation: “Why shouldn’t I be in that? … What haven’t I done?” His performance last night looked a lot like the answer.

A big part of why the game played out the way it did offensively — huge night for McDaniels, a lot more two-man game with Conley/Gobert — was about Phoenix adjusting how they were guarding KAT.
In Game 1, the plan was to guard KAT in the post straight up with KD, and if anyone pic.twitter.com/UzSEBAp5eC10:22 AM

Now this McDaniels-Durant matchup.
McDaniels long, athletic, highly competitive, prideful on defense, but when Durant shoots over the top and then drawd fouls, that can lead to frustration.

Don’t like this look for Wolves, as McD is so much better on Booker than KD. Most important thing vs KD is being able to get physical and keep him from getting to spots, McD can’t do that. – 8:34 PM

This is where you look at finding the big.
Durant tried to thread needle there to find Nurkic and got pass stolen, but the Suns don’t have the lob threat to where when they draw the big, just throw it over the top behind the big.
#Suns timeout. Down 18-12. 3:14 left in 1st. – 8:07 PM

More on this storyline

Gerald Bourguet: Kevin Durant believes the Suns have communicated well enough: “You can talk all you want, if you don’t execute what you just talked about, it does you no good. Talking and the rah-rah speeches and all that stuff is cool to a certain point, but you gotta go out there and execute.” pic.twitter.com/BW4khR4zqP -via Twitter @GeraldBourguet / April 25, 2024
Duane Rankin: “You got to challenge him. He’s a great defensive player, but there are times you have to challenge him.” Kevin Durant on Rudy Gobert. Also talked about improving closeout defense, keeping the ball in front and generating more 3s without compromising transition defense. #Suns pic.twitter.com/uJ9UPt2myX -via Twitter @DuaneRankin / April 25, 2024
In Game 2, the third-seeded Timberwolves scored 12 in a row in the third, a spurt that allowed them to pull away and ignite the home crowd. Phoenix lost guard Grayson Allen, who reinjured his right ankle during this stretch, but the bigger issue was the officiating. The Suns let a few questionable whistles distract them and lose focus. Minnesota’s lead ballooned to 19. “We’re trying our best to get out of those little slumps when they go on a 7 … 8-0 run, but I think we still try to put ourselves in position to win,” Durant said. “We cut it to like 13, 12, but we just couldn’t get over that hump. This team’s been killing us in the third with those runs, so we have to figure that out.” -via The Athletic / April 24, 2024
