OSU Hires Steve Lutz As New Head Basketball Coach
(Stillwater, OK) - Oklahoma State has hired Western Kentucky's Steve Lutz as their next head basketball coach.
Lutz joins with a wealth of experience. He spent 26 years as an assistant coach spending time at Stephen F. Austin, Creighton and Purdue. He's been a head coach for just three seasons, but has taken every team he's coached in that span to the NCAA Tournament.
Lutz led Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to three conference championships in his two years at the helm. Two Southland Conference Tournament titles and one regular season crown.
Following that, he spent one season with Western Kentucky. He led the Hilltoppers to the Conference USA tournament title going 22-12.
Lutz hasn't won less than 22 games in any season as a head coach compiling a career record of 69-35.
Lutz was quoted in a press release, saying “I'd like to thank Chad Weiberg and Dr. Shrum for entrusting me with one of college basketball's most storied programs. It's a responsibility that I don't take lightly. Cowboy Nation -- I look forward to meeting you all soon and hitting the ground running. Know that my staff and I will work diligently to recruit and retain hardworking kids who will represent you well, on and off the court, and consistently compete for Big 12 championships.”
OSU athletics director Chad Weiberg had this to say about Lutz: “Coach Lutz is known as one of the hardest-working coaches in the business,” Weiberg said. “He has worked at all levels of college basketball and has deep ties to this part of the country, especially Texas. The work he has put into his career has resulted in success as a head coach and why I believe he is the right person to be the leader of Cowboy Basketball.”
Lutz replaces Mike Boynton, who was fired after seven seasons as the Cowboy coach.
