Golden State basketball is on the way! Come join our game thread and chat about tonight’s matchup here.

The Golden State Warriors play the Dallas Mavericks for their final game of the 2023 calendar year. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM PT in San Francisco and can be watched on NBC Sports Bay Area.

Previously with the Warriors:

It doesn’t get much more disappointing than Golden State’s 114-102 loss against the Miami Heat on Thursday night. The Warriors failed miserably to match the energy levels of an undermanned Heat team which was playing without their best player in All-Star forward Jimmy Butler. Head coach Steve Kerr held nothing back when discussing the game during his postgame presser.

What to watch for tonight:

The Warriors play a Mavericks team that currently ranks sixth in the West with a record of 18-14. Although this will be the first time these two teams meet this season, Golden State enters tonight’s matchup with a two-game winning streak against Dallas dating back to last year. Their most recent matchup resulted in a 127-125 Warriors victory on March 22, 2023.

Dallas represents an interesting matchup for the Warriors. The two teams are similar in that they feature generational point guards who can both attract the full attention of opposing defenses on a consistent basis. Having said that, they approach this problem in different ways.

For Dallas, everything revolves around their franchise player Luka Doncic. He touches the ball on every possession, and exploits opposing defenses by consistently making the correct reads. This is a big reason why he leads the team in almost every statistical category including points, rebounds, and assists. With Doncic leading the way, the Mavericks own the eighth best offensive rating in the league (117.5) and the lowest turnover percentage at 11.9 percent.

In contrast, the Warriors run their system through Stephen Curry. While Curry is more than capable of attacking in a similar fashion as Doncic, Golden State prefers to utilize the attention he attracts to open up shots and driving lanes for the rest of the team., Golden State ranks third with one of the highest assist percentages in the NBA (67.5%), whereas Dallas ranks 25th.

Curry and Doncic will undoubtedly create opportunities for their respective teams, so the key to this one will be which team’s role players will step up the most on both sides of the ball.

It should be a fun game. Enjoy the basketball Dub Nation. GO WARRIORS!!!
