Tempo sign centre Mariella Fasoula to developmental contract

0 1

The Toronto Tempo have filled out their first of two developmental roster spots.

Centre Mariella Fasoula was signed to a developmental contract, the team announced on Tuesday.

Fasoula, 28, joins the Tempo after spending training camp with the Golden State Valkyries — making a pre-season appearance last week, when she scored five points (2-of-3 shooting), one rebound and one block in six minutes off the bench.

The native of Greece spent the 2026 off-season playing for JK Istanbul in the Turkish KBSL, averaging 17.6 points per game, 7.9 rebounds, and 3.0 assists across 19 games. She’s also represented her country as a member of the Greek senior women’s team since 2015.

Fasoula previously spent four seasons playing in the NCAA, split between Boston College and Vanderbilt. As a senior with the Commodores, she started all 30 games and put up team-highs of 399 points, 197 rebounds and 27 blocks.

As for the Tempo, they have 15 other players under contract — aside from Fasoula — after announcing that forward Elizabeth Balogun had been waived last Saturday.

The final roster for the regular season is due ahead of Friday night’s opener. Teams across the WNBA hold 12 regular roster spots and two developmental slots.

Developmental roster spots are a new addition for the league as of the 2026 season.

“We probably all have to get used to it,” Tempo head coach Sandy Brondello told reporters when asked about factoring in development spots to roster building. “Because if you cut a player, anyone can pick them up. I think some have already (converted) players to developmental players, we’ve seen that strategy.”

As for how Brondello is approaching roster building as a whole ahead of her first season in Toronto, she said she “just wants to make sure the puzzle fits.”

“Do we have enough playmaking, rebounding, toughness, shooting … we’ve got some tough decisions to make. Every year it gets harder and harder, and the talent level goes up.”

The Tempo’s inaugural season tips off on Friday, when they host the Washington Mystics.
