Duke Finishes Football Season With A Win Over Pitt
As the Elko era goes from success to success
Duke wrapped up a successful 2023 season with a 30-19 win over Pitt.
The Blue Devils started the scoring with a field goal before Pitt rattled off 10 points.
Grayson Loftis tied the game back up with 1:07 left in the second quarter. Todd Pelino tacked on another field goal to put Duke back up 13-10 before Pitt hit another to tie it back up.
Grayson Loftis passed for another TD with 3:44 left in the third and Jaquez Moore ran for another to put Duke up 27-13 at 11:54 into the fourth.
Pitt scored another TD to cut the lead to27-19 but failed to get the two-point conversion. With 5:17 left, it was a danger point because the Panthers could have still tied it up. However, Pelino hit another field goal with 1:59 left and that pretty much put the game out of reach.
There’s a lot to say about this season. It had immense promise but losing your top two QBs to injury and leaving the offense in the hands of a true freshman was going to be tough.
That said, Loftis has really matured and clearly he’s being well coached.
Duke finishes the regular season 7-5 and depending on what happens in the post-season, could finish with just one win less than last year’s 9-4. Given the difficulties this team faced, that’d be pretty impressive.
