[Men's Tennis] UNOH Holds Off Indiana Tech for Men's Tennis Tournament Crown
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - (Tournament Page) - The championship match of the 2022 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Men's Tennis Tournament came down to the final two singles matches as top-seeded UNOH won the tournament title with a 4-2 hard-fought victory against second-seeded Indiana Tech. Hosted by Cornerstone, the day's competition was set to be played at Gainey Tennis Center but was moved inside the Grand Rapids Racquet Club due to weather.
Indiana Tech took the doubles point as Tyler Sinclair and Phill Labbewon at No. 1 Doubles and Callum Partington and Jakub Federowicz won at No. 3 Doubles. UNOH got wins from Sergio Conde at No. 1 Singles, David Ayguavives at No. 5 Singles, and Nils Messin at No. 6 singles. Federowicz picked up a point for Indiana Tech at No. 4 singles. With UNOH up 3-2, the remaining two singles competitions tightened up. Anastasis Lavdas (Indiana Tech) was one game up on David Ayguavives of UNOH at the No. 5 slot when Marcos Salazar gave the Racers the win with a 7-2 tiebreaker against Juan Avellaneda.
It's the seventh tournament title for UNOH in the last eight years with the 2020 tournament being cancelled due to COVID. With the win, UNOH receives the WHAC's automatic berth to the NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship May 17-21 in Mobile, Ala.
