Indianapolis Jewish Community Center shooting – Two shot as gunfire erupts in crowd during argument at basketball game
TWO people were shot at a Jewish community center in Indianapolis on Saturday.
Police said the victims were in stable condition after shots were fired at JCC Indianapolis around 2pm local time.
Investigators told local news outlet IndyStar that the shooting may have been related to an argument during a basketball game at the community center.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said its officers do not believe the incident was a hate crime.
“At this time, IMPD does not believe this shooting was religiously motivated or in any way connected with a hate crime,” the agency said on Twitter.
WITNESS ACCOUNT
A 14-year-old witness told IndyStar that a five-on-five basketball game was underway that involved “a lot of arguing, a lot of trash-talking.”
The teen said someone opened fire into a crowd: “He shot them three times.”
The witness said the gunshots caused some panic as people raced out of the center.
“Everyone was just running out the building,” they said.
“And he took off — he dipped. He completely ran off as fast as he could.”
Officers have not yet located the suspect, who ran off after the shooting.
Police asked the public to stay away from the area, though there was said to be no active threat to the community.
Worried parents gathered outside the center before they were directed to a classroom at the property, where they were being reunited with their kids.
The investigation was ongoing.
The Sun contacted the police department for more information about the investigation and victims.
