New series, Part 1: Toumani Camara

0 19
I’m in serious UD basketball withdrawal — I’m analyzing rosters of non-conference opponents … going over past UD seasons at sports-reference.com … checking the @DaytonMBB Twitter page for any new information. So I decided I’m going to post a thread about each player on the UD roster — a new thread every few days. Just a little stats and analysis, plus a highlight link if I have it, especially for the seven newbies that we haven’t seen play in a Flyer uniform yet. Comments encouraged, disagreement expected, Flyer hoops debate dearly anticipated. Happy dog days of the offseason!

Toumani Camara ... 6-8, 220 pounds ... age 21.2 (DOB 5-8-00)
Hollywood, Fla. Chaminade-Madonna HS (originally from Belgium) ... #103 HS recruit (247 composite)
Wore #10 for Georgia in 20-21 ...... Entering third year of CBB / first at UD
28.4 min pg … 12.8 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 1.6 apg, 1.2 spg, 1.1 bpg, 2.4 TOpg
48.6% FG … 26.3% 3PT … 62.1% FT … 23.1% of FGA were 3s

He should be the best player on UD’s roster this year. If not, that’s great news, because it means Amzil or someone else is exceeding expectations. I don’t expect Camara to slump, because as a sophomore at Georgia, he was consistent overall (scored in double figures in 21 of his 25 games), and consistent against good competition (in 10 games against NCAA tourney teams, he posted 13.6 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 52.5% FG). His areas to work on are turnovers (several 3-4 turnover games), and foul trouble (fouled out 3 times, and had 8 other games with 4 fouls). He averaged 4.1 free-throw attempts per game, which is more than twice as many as any returning UD player. I’ll be interested to see how much they have him shoot the 3, in an effort to help him prepare for an NBA career. Lastly, was Ryan Perryman the last truly great rebounder UD had? Or maybe you think Waleskowski hit that level? (I think Josh Cunningham, Dyshawn Pierre, Chris Wright are a step lower). Camara could be the next one. He’s a year older and stronger after posting eight double-doubles last year, most of them against SEC athletes.
