Recruiting: Chet Holmgren To Gonzaga
In a surprise to no one, celebrated 7-1 recruit Chet Holmgren, aka The Slim Reaper, after an apparently lengthy and rambling spot on ESPN, has announced for Gonzaga.
It’s a solid choice for him which will allow him to use his unusually well developed guard skills to maximum effect.
Which leads to the question: how do you guard a guy like that?
Which leads to the easy answer: Buck Williams.
Huh?
Stick with us, kiddos.
Rocky Mount native Buck Williams was six feet and eight inches of strength and magnificently focused hostility. And one place he enjoyed focusing it was on Virginia’s 7-4 Ralph Sampson.
Sampson was wondrously gifted, but Williams beat him up physically every time they played.
Currrently listed at 190 but frankly still frail, Holmgren will surely fill out over the next few years.
But it won’t happen next year and you can bet that, until he proves that he can handle it, he’s going to get abused.
And if the NCAA accepts rules recommendations and goes to six fouls, that guy can give a sigh of relief that he’s not playing in the Big Ten. If you can give 18 fouls per game, not to mention the ones that don’t get called, Holmgren will take a beating every single night.
