A Towel Worn By Kobe Bryant During His 2016 Farewell Speech Just Sold For Over $30,000
On April 13, 2016, Kobe Bryant orchestrated the perfect farewell in his final career game, scoring 60 points and a victory against the Utah Jazz. In his 20 years with the Lakers, Bryant delivered five NBA championships, with his power on the court shining through all the way to the final buzzer in his final game.
After that memorable game, Kobe wrapped this 24″ x 41″ Body Armor towel around his neck, greeting past and present teammates and fans, and delivering an unforgettable farewell speech, ending with the now famous phrase, “Mamba Out”.
As Bryant walked off the court, a fan grabbed the Body Armor towel off of his shoulders. The fan who originally acquired the towel sold it in an auction in 2016 for $8,365.00.
But with Kobe’s untimely death earlier this year, interest in Kobe-related memorabilia has risen exponentially, and so the new towel owner contacted Iconic Auctions, an Arizona-based company that specializes in authentic autographs and memorabilia, to resell it.
On Sunday, the towel, along with two tickets from Bryant’s farewell game, sold for a total of $33,077.16, according to Jeff Woolf, president of Iconic Auctions. The items were accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from Iconic Auctions.
The winning bidder, David Kohler, is an avid Lakers collector who is known for having the largest collection of Lakers memorabilia in the world. “He is a devoted Lakers fan,” Woolf said. “His long-term plan is to create a museum in Southern California.”
It’s good to see that the towel ended up in the hands of a true fan, and here’s hoping that he makes that dream of a Kobe Bryant museum a reality!
