Chris Mullin recalls when a retired Michael Jordan dominated a Warriors practice

The GOAT didn’t take kindly to trash talk.

Michael Jordan is notorious for being hyper-competitive. When he retired before the 1993-94 season to pursue a career in baseball, people around the league always believed he would be back.

In a preview of their upcoming documentary focused on Jordan’s return to the league titled “I’m Back,” NBC Sports Chicago released a snippet of Warriors legend Chris Mullin sharing a story of when Jordan dropped by a Dubs practice.

“I was injured at the time so I do remember Michael coming down to practice and we’re basically the same size, the same sneaker size,” Mullin said. “I think we had Tim Hardaway and Latrell Sprewell at that point in time. They might have been popping off a little bit. Michael said, ‘Mully, let’s go, get me your gear.’”

Once MJ gets that fire lit under him, it was pretty much lights out for anyone playing against him.

”He went to my locker, put my gear on, and went out there and basically single-handedly beat the Warriors down by himself,” Mullin recalled. “That’s when I was like, this guy is coming back.”

Jordan was able to practice with the Warriors because of his friendship with then Dubs assistant coach, Rod Higgins.

When Jordan reached out, Higgins didn’t think head coach Don Nelson would be cool with it, but when he reached out, Nelson was thrilled with the idea.

“I was on my way to practice and he called and said, ‘Do you think it’s okay if I practice with you guys?’ And then I said, ‘I don’t think so, but let me call Nellie,’” Higgins said. “Nellie’s response was, ‘Hell yeah.’”

Hardaway said the GOAT helped ramp up that practice.

Too bad social media wasn’t a thing back then.
