We have high hopes for the post-season, but let’s pause to celebrate the incredible regular season … the likes of which we may never see again.
You can challenge any of these or add your own.
- MVP: Can’t separate the roommates. Obi and Jalen are co-winners.
- Biggest shot: Hands down, it’s Jalen’s last-second three-point dagger at St. Louis. No other shots need apply.
- Best win: See above. The win at St. Louis defined the season.
- Best loss in regulation: Sorry, no candidates here.
- Best national exposure (non-game category): Obi interviews by Scott Van Pelt and Jay Bilas were great, and the ongoing appearance by Obi in ESPN’s Top 10 is invaluable … but ESPN’s GameDay is the winner here.
- Best new halftime show: Annual favorites like Red Panda, the young jump ropers and frisbee dogs are always fun, but the father-daughter balancing act was a welcome addition.
- Best play: No play better embodies this team’s unselfishness, efficiency and excitement than the bam-bam-bam-BAM play of Chatman to Mikesell with immediate bounce pass to Landers, whose wrap-around pass in traffic to onrushing Toppin resulted in a windmill slam.
- Most impressive stretch: The 17-0 opening against Rhode Island was stunning and exhilarating in what’s supposed to be one of the season’s biggest showdowns.
- Stickiest player: You can’t go wrong with the ultimate glue guys, Mikesell and Landers, but it’s Chatman on defense when he’s at his best. You might ask Fats Russell.
- Best loss: Okay, not many candidates here. You may say there are no moral victories, but there’s no doubt that the overtime loss to Kansas provided a measuring stick that has paid dividends for the Flyers in national polls.
