[Women's Basketball] Comeback Falls Short as Hannah Myers Drops 24 points in Loss to ACU

0 88

PHOENIX – Down 32-19 with 4:50 remaining in the first half, the SDC women's basketball turned a page.

They trimmed their deficit to five at the half and later regained the lead late in the third quarter.

The rest of the game went back and forth but unfortunately for the Hawks, the Firestorm was on the winning side of things as they defeated SDC 70-66 to prevent SDC from their first conference win of the season.

"This is a tough one to swallow," head coach Shawn Chaffin said. "We had a couple of late chances, but I am proud of how we answered each of their runs. Hannah (Myers) was huge with another double-double and we held their best player to five points."

Hannah Myers scored 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Cyannadie Whatley tallied 17 points.

With 3:40 remaining in the half, Meagan Moore hit a triple with Myers hitting a pair of free throws and Cailey Vitug added a trey to give the Hawks an 8-1 run. Destiny Byrd's free throw with 39 seconds remaining in the first brought the deficit down to four before ACU hit free throws of their own to put their lead back up to six.

The Hawks trimmed down their deficit little by little until Myers gave them the 2-point lead with 1:22 in the third.

The two teams traded leads in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter before ACU took the lead for good but it never felt safe for the Firestorm. Myers scored four straight points for SDC in the last minute and a half as she made it a 67-66 game in favor of ACU.

But the Firestorm held on for the win in the final 20 seconds hitting a pair of free throws.

SDC is back on the court Thursday hosting The Master's University at Vanguard.
