U.S. gets by Turks in basketball World Cup

SHANGHAI — Khris Middleton's two free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining in overtime saved the United States from what would have been a shocking loss, and the two-time defending champion Americans survived Jayson Tatum's sprained ankle and rallied to beat Turkey 93-92 in a basketball World Cup Group E game Tuesday night.

The win clinched a second-round berth for the U.S. (2-0), which next faces Japan (0-2) on Thursday in Shanghai.

The Czech Republic (1-1) won 89-76 to keep Japan winless.

In other results on Tuesday: In Group H, Australia (2-0) beat Senegal (0-2) 81-68 and advanced, and Lithuania (2-0) defeated Canada (0-2) 92-69 and booked its place in the second round; In Group F, Brazil (2-0) advanced with a 79-78 win over Greece (1-1) and New Zealand (1-1) topped Montenegro (0-2) 93-83; In Group G, the Dominican Republic (2-0) advanced after its 70-68 victory over Germany (0-2), and France (2-0) is into Round 2 after its 103-64 rout of Jordan (0-2).

College basketball: The women's basketball rivalry between UConn and Tennessee will be renewed. The first game will be Jan. 23, 2020, at the XL Center in Hartford, with a return game in Knoxville during the 2020-21 season.

College football: No. 1 Clemson and No. 2 Alabama are at the top of the first regular-season Associated Press poll of 2019. The Tigers received 54 first-place votes from the media out of 62. The Crimson Tide received the remaining eight.

NHL: Defenseman Niklas Kronwall is retiring after 15 seasons with the Red Wings. Kronwall, who says he'll take on a new role with the organization, played 953 games in his NHL career and was part of the Detroit team that won the Stanley Cup in 2008.
