Kevin Durant opened an after-school center

The generous superstar is making a difference, on and off the court.

Kevin Durant has long maintained that there is a whole lot more to life than basketball. And the Golden State Warriors superstar has consistently backed that up with his actions off the court.

This time last year, Durant pledged $10 million towards creating The Durant Center, an after-school facility in Prince George’s County, Maryland, where the NBA MVP grew up. And on Wednesday, with Durant in town ahead of Thursday’s matchup with the Washington Wizards, the facility officially opened.

The facility, called College Track at The Durant Center, is aimed towards making sure youth have the resources and opportunities necessary to make it to college. The center offers facilities, tutoring, scholarships, and support, both financial and emotional, to low income kids in the area, and sports an inaugural class of 69 students.

Durant, who grew up a few blocks from where the center is located, was excused from practice on Wednesday to be at the grand opening. He was accompanied by his teammate Quinn Cook, who grew up in the same area and has been friends with Durant since childhood.

“To have this as a kind of staple and my family’s name on it and it’s doing so much for kids, man, it’s one of the greatest accomplishments so far in my career,” Durant said, as reported by the Washington Post. “As a basketball player, it’s easy for us to say, ‘Let’s create an AAU team or let’s do a camp.’ As you get older, you start to look for bigger ways to impact. I see my peers, and not just NBA players but athletes in general, but just trying to push the future forward, push the youth forward.”

He’s one of the greatest of all time on the court. And even better off of it.
