Pat McCaw was reportedly unhappy with the Nick Young addition

The former Warrior wanted out in part because of his treatment when the team signed the Swag Champ.

With Patrick McCaw and the Golden State Warriors, there are more questions than answers. And that may always be the case.

But while we don’t know much, we do know a little. According to Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic, no one in the Warriors organization, or who covers the team, is aware of why McCaw so badly wanted to leave the defending champions. But Thompson points to some discord stemming from the offseason of 2017, when the team opted to not only sign Nick Young, but give him a large opportunity.

News leaked that the Warriors had agreed to terms with free-agent guard Nick Young. Immediately, McCaw’s role was up in the air. Also: the Warriors re-signed Iguodala for three more years.

When training camp opened, coach Steve Kerr, without knowing it, might have made the situation worse by declaring an open competition for the backup shooting guard spot. According to insiders, this was the first grievance McCaw had with the Warriors and it is about the only tangible issue that has been vocalized. McCaw was confident coming in after a good summer. It wasn’t as productive as the summer of 2017, when he played well at Summer League and had a good showing at Tim Grgurich’s camp for young players. But he was healthy again and feeling good. Having to compete for minutes with Young, who came into camp out of shape, seems to have harmed McCaw’s trust in the Warriors.

On the one hand, it’s understandable for a hard-working player to be a little upset that an out-of-shape free agent can waltz into training camp and be given the same opportunity.

On the other hand, McCaw was coming off a rookie season in which he averaged 4.0 points per game, and played for the best team in the league - did he really not expect them to try and improve their roster, even at his expense?

It’s unclear how upset McCaw was over the situation, and how much it played into his actions a year later. It seems more like his decision to turn down multiple contract offers from the Warriors, and instead take far less money from the Cleveland Cavaliers and Toronto Raptors, was the result of many small things, rather than one big thing.

Either way, the situation remains odd, especially with McCaw insisting that he still loves the Warriors organization.

But he appears to be very happy with the Raptors, even though he left a lot of money on the table and his role is unclear, and that’s the most important thing.

McCaw has yet to make his debut for Toronto. Their next game is on Sunday, at the Washington Wizards, and that’s likely when we’ll see the 2016 second-round draft pick play for his third NBA team.
