Alfonzo McKinnie’s contract is now guaranteed for the year

0 15

The training camp signing has impressed, and as a result, he’s sticking around.

Alfonzo McKinnie was initially signed by the Golden State Warriors to a tiny training camp contract, to provide some preseason depth. Then he was signed to a two-year, non-guaranteed contract, largely to serve as a placeholder while the team waited for Patrick McCaw.

Now that non-guaranteed contract is guaranteed for the rest of this season.

The Warriors could have cut McKinnie at any point before today, and would not have been on the hook for the rest of his salary. But they didn’t, and as a result, he’s a guaranteed contract for the rest of the season, though still non-guaranteed for 2019-2020.

McKinnie has impressed the team with his fearlessness on offense, and his strong ability crashing the glass, especially on the offensive side of the court. He’s averaging 5.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game, while shooting 37.5% from beyond the arc.

This wasn’t what the Warriors were expecting during the preseason, but they’ve been happy with McKinnie’s contributions, and the McCaw situation took a downward spiral, so here they are.

Golden State still has one open roster spot that they can fill later in the season.
