[Women's Basketball] Hornets Give 5th Ranked Lady Lions Trouble

SAINT LOUIS, MO- The Hornets gave the 5th ranked Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions a run for their money as they came within 12 of the defending NAIA National Champions with a final score of 59-47.

Takesia Barnes (SO/Memphis, TN) led Harris-Stowe offensively with her first double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds. Jay'la Davis contributed 10 points as well while Kierra Weir (SO/Springfield, IL) recorded eight.

FHU's Sandrea Sylman led all scorers with 20 points. Carrie Hatchel chipped in 17 while Haylee Croom posted a double-double with 16 points and 20 rebounds.

Harris-Stowe brought the heat in the first 10 minutes gaining a 7-2 lead just three minutes into the game.

The Lady Lions would rally back to make it an 8-8 game after Sylman banked in a second chance lay-up. Back-to-back shots from Davis and Kambri Davison (SO/Tulsa, OK) would push the Hornets lead 13-8 but three consecutive makes from Freed-Hardeman would give them a 14-13 lead after the first quarter.

The Lady Lions took advantage of the Hornets drought in the second quarter pushing their lead to 30-21 going into the break.

After Reagan Floyd scored on a fast break lay-up to make it 45-33, Jordan May (SO/St. Louis, MO) sank a free-throw and Davis found her way into the paint and put HSSU just nine points back (45-36) for the final quarter of play.

Harris-Stowe chipped away at Freed-Hardeman's lead, getting within two of the Lady Lions. But, a quick 10-0 run by FHU would give them the push they needed to secure the win.

Harris-Stowe (1-2; 0-1 AMC) will be back in action on Tuesday when they host the Mustangs of Mount Mercy University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
