Adam Vinatieri added the field goals and scoring records to his GOAT résumé

0 11

Adam Vinatieri’s records aren’t going to be touched for a very long time, if ever.

Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri has been close to automatic for a ridiculous 23 NFL seasons, and now he has the NFL records to prove it.

With a 42-yard field goal in Week 4 against the Texans, Vinatieri moved one ahead of Morten Andersen for the top spot on the all-time successful field goals leaderboard. It was the 566th made field goal of Vinatieri’s career, which is a record that will stand the test of time for a very long time, if not forever.

Less than a month later, Vinatieri passed Andersen on the NFL’s all-time leading scorers list with a 25-yard field goal. It put him at 2,547 points scored — three more than Andersen and 700 more than the next closest active player on the list, Sebastian Janikowski.

Vinatieri, 45, began his career in 1996 and has made at least 20 field goals in each season of his career, except for his injury-shortened 2009. The next highest kicker on the list of successful field goals is Phil Dawson, who is 43 and still more than 100 field goals behind Vinatieri.

With extra points now more difficult, it may be difficult for any kicker to get a chance at making up ground on the scoring title.

Vinatieri’s clutch kicking in the postseason already secured him GOAT status at his position and he has a safe place in the Hall of Fame, but now he has the most prestigious kicking records to boot.
