The Bills quarterbacks are only going to make things worse

0 15

The Bills offense had a game to forget against the Ravens. There’s no sign of that changing soon either.

The Bills did not have a great time in their season opener against the Ravens. They got blown out by a score of 47-3 and gave up 26 points in the first half.

After getting the nod as the Bills starting quarterback, Nathan Peterman had an abysmal performance against the Ravens. In just over one half of play, the second year quarterback completed just five of his 18 attempts for just 24 yards and two interceptions.

Peterman was all over the place in this game. On his two ugly interceptions, he threw the ball right into the hands of Ravens defenders. This was way off from his productive showing in the preseason where he completed 80 percent of his passes.

As a whole, the Bills couldn’t get a damn thing going against the stingy Ravens defense. They had just 153 yards of total offense, generated 0 first downs in the first half, and gave up six sacks.

Buffalo averaged 2.5 yards per play for the game. For reference, the NFL average for yards per play in 2017 was 5.3. Buffalo also struggled with penalties — they finished the game with 10 penalties for 100 lost yards, giving them just 53 net yards of offense. That’s not good!

Now the Bills are going to have to ask themselves if Peterman can continue to be the starting quarterback. Based on his display today, Peterman should be holding a clipboard, but the Bills have a tough couple of opponents coming up.

The last time Sean McDermott was put into this situation was last season when Nathan Peterman threw five interceptions in a single half against the Los Angeles Chargers. For what it’s worth, McDermott gave essentially the same answer after that game before he went back to Tyrod Taylor as the starter. Throwing a rookie quarterback to the wolves is a bit of a different beast — especially with the schedule Buffalo has coming up.

Next week they play the Los Angeles Chargers who had one of the top pass defenses in the league last year and the week after they travel to Minnesota to take on a Vikings defense that picked off Jimmy Garoppolo three times to start the season. If the game the Bills just played against the Ravens is any indication, they’re about to have a rough two games — two teams that they might not want to expose Josh Allen to just yet.

The Bills don’t have a clear answer to their immediate quarterback answer, but the fans will be clamoring for Allen to start. It might be in their best interest to begin the Josh Allen era now since everybody and their mama knows Nathan Peterman doesn’t have much a future in Buffalo past this season.

It’s going to be a rough season for them offensively regardless.

Even though the Bills were projected to struggle this year, it was still jarring to see a professional football team get dominated the way they did. This is a rebuilding year for the Bills and right now they’re starting from scratch. Godspeed, Bills fans.
