Ed Carpenter wins pole for Indy 500
Ed Carpenter has pole position for the Indianapolis 500, plus full results and starting grid from Pole Day.
Qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 is over, and Ed Carpenter has pole position after the Fast Nine shootout.
Danica Patrick qualified ninth fastest on Day 1, and on Day 2 beat out Scott Dixon and Helio Castroneves in the Fast Nine, starting seventh on the grid. Castroneves was the fastest on Day 1, but he couldn’t put it together on Sunday, starting eighth on the grid, ahead of Dixon.
Simon Pagenaud, Will Power, Josef Newgarden, Sebastien Bourdais and Spencer Pigot have spots 2-6 on the grid.
The first day of qualifying established the Fast Nine, each of whom then went out to set a four-lap average speed to determine spots 1-9 on the grid for the Indy 500. Spots 10-33 also advanced from the first day, and had their times wiped going into Sunday’s session. That session set spots 10-33 on the grid.
James Hinchcliffe and Pippa Mann were both bumped on the first day of qualifying, not able to make it into the top 33. Both had car issues and suffered from the poor timing of multiple rain delays. Hinchcliffe in particular is notable as the pole-sitter from last year’s race, yet he won’t be taking part at all.
There weren’t many surprises on Sunday, but one was the rough day for Alexander Rossi. He was 10th on Saturday, but posted an average speed of 224.935 mph, and will start 32nd on the grid on race day, ahead of only Conor Daly. It was reported that an underinflated tire was the reason for the issues.
Tony Kanaan was the best of the rest. The 2013 race-winner said that “Today, our pole is going to be 10th,” and that’s where he wound up, with an average speed of 227.664 mph.
