Everything important that happened Friday at the NFL Combine
Saquon Barkley was Friday’s star as running backs and offensive linemen went through their drills. Meanwhile, the quarterbacks got their chance to shine ... on the mic.
The 2018 NFL Combine is now over for running backs and offensive linemen. Here’s how the RBs did, and here are the OL results.
Get caught up with all the best quotes and other action from Friday:
Lamar Jackson confirms he is, in fact, a quarterback
This shouldn’t need to be said but ...
Jackson: "No teams have asked me to play WR.....I don't even know where it comes from, i'm strictly a quarterback"
— Patrick Claybon (@PatrickClaybon) March 2, 2018
No, he’s not going to play WR:
Lamar Jackson, making it as clear as humanly possible. pic.twitter.com/v7K8sQwf3J
— Andy Staples (@Andy_Staples) March 2, 2018
You did, Lamar!
Lamar Jackson having fun with this.
— Eric Edholm (@Eric_Edholm) March 2, 2018
“Man, I thought I did a good job at quarterback!”
He won’t run the 40, which really isn’t that important for quarterbacks who definitely aren’t wide receivers:
Lamar Jackson says he will not run the 40 at the #NFLCombine. He said he might run it at pro day. He will throw at Combine.
— CollegeFootball 24/7 (@NFLDraft) March 2, 2018
*chef’s kiss*
“No Wildcat for me,” Lamar Jackson said. “This isn’t the Dolphins with Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams.”
— Joe Schad (@schadjoe) March 2, 2018
Josh Allen with some wise words
Never google yourself, never tweet:
Josh Allen says he doesn’t read articles written about him and told his parents to just delete Twitter and Instagram and not worry about that stuff.
— Adam Stites (@AdamStites_) March 2, 2018
He’s also working on his accuracy:
Allen says the majority of his missed throws at Wyoming had to do with poor footwork, which he’s been working on while training with Jordan Palmer alongside Sam Darnold.
— Nick Shook (@TheNickShook) March 2, 2018
Everyone is comparing Sam Darnold to Baker Mayfield
So this is already getting old:
Darnold gets same opening question as Mayfield: turning the #Browns around. He went a more humble route with the answer. #NFLCombine2018
— Chase Goodbread (@ChaseGoodbread) March 2, 2018
USC QB Sam Darnold on becoming the face of a franchise: "I won't know how to lead a franchise until I'm actually doing it." Stark contrast to Baker Mayfield. pic.twitter.com/9NGaCwKS36
— CollegeFootball 24/7 (@NFLDraft) March 2, 2018
Unlike Mayfield and Rosen, Darnold won't say he's the best QB in this draft. "That's not for me to decide." #NFLcombine
— Arthur Arkush (@ArthurArkush) March 2, 2018
Darnold won’t throw at the combine, but he will at USC’s pro day:
Former USC QB Sam Darnold on not throwing at the #NFLCombine: "I felt like it was the best decision for me."
— Ethan B. Greenberg (@EthanBGreenberg) March 2, 2018
Confirmed he'll throw at his pro day on 3/21.
J.T. Barrett doesn’t mind flying under the radar
After, like, 13 years as Ohio State’s quarterback, J.T. Barrett is fine ceding the spotlight:
Reporter: "is it weird not being the center of attention" (gestures to the big crowd by Darnold)
— Scott Grodsky (@ScottGrodsky) March 2, 2018

Lamar Jackson, an agent (but still not a WR)
Here’s why Jackson can act as his own agent.
Lamar Jackson told me that his mom is not his agent, “she is my manager” and he added “I represent myself.” Jackson told me he does not think an agent is necessary with the current rookie scale for initial #NFL contracts. pic.twitter.com/CfhvyCWGQ1
— Josina Anderson (@JosinaAnderson) March 2, 2018
He’s got a good point:
Lamar Jackson said he doesn’t have an agent because salary slotted for draft picks and they would “take a cut of my paycheck and I feel I deserve it.” #9sports
— Mike Klis (@MikeKlis) March 2, 2018
Calvin Ridley is ready to go
Calvin Ridley is widely projected as the first wide receiver off the board this year.
More from Calvin Ridley at the podium in Indy: “I feel like whoever chooses me, I’m starting on that team. I’m not trying to sound bold or anything, I want to be the humble guy. But I feel like whoever chooses me, I’m coming in and starting, playing right away.” #cowboyswire
— Rob Phillips (@robphillips3) March 2, 2018
Stephen White’s scouting report on Ridley is a must-read.
What are you waiting for? Go read it!
Luke Falk talks to Dolphins
The Washington State quarterback was a little nervous meeting an Ace Ventura star:
Luke Falk’s first formal meeting was with the Miami Dolphins. “Dan Marino was in there so I was a bit star-struck in there,” he said.
— Joe Schad (@schadjoe) March 2, 2018
Another reminder ...
That Saquon Barkley is a star:
Penn State RB Saquon Barkley at 2018 Combine:

- Stronger than Joe Thomas
- Quicker than DeSean Jackson
- Faster than Devin Hester
- Jumps higher than Julio Jones@PennStateFball pic.twitter.com/usgR6vJvOn
Jaylen Samuels plays every position
He worked out with the tight ends, but that’s probably not where he’s playing in the NFL:
jaylen samuels plays tight end/receiver/running back/H-back. confirmed that he’s like most kids a few months out of school, in that he struggles to explain to family members and friends what he actually does
— Alex Kirshner (@alex_kirshner) March 2, 2018
Yeah, this makes sense:
NC State TE Jaylen Samuels said he met with the #Eagles already.
— TURRON DAVENPORT (@TDavenport_NFL) March 2, 2018
Josh Rosen, also quotable
Josh Rosen, just like Baker Mayfield said about himself, believes that he’s the top QB in this class:
Josh Rosen: I think I’m the best QB in the draft. pic.twitter.com/mxxGNJzi7H
— Josina Anderson (@JosinaAnderson) March 2, 2018
But he also knows he’s interviewing for a job right now:
Josh Rosen asked about being a backup to Eli Manning: “Whatever my coach asks me to do. ... if I’m asked to be a backup, I’m going to try to be th country’s best backup.”
— Mike Jones (@ByMikeJones) March 2, 2018
Someone just asked Josh Rosen if he’d switch positions. Responded smiling, “I’d be open to it. ... I think not touching the ball on a game-winning drive would drive me crazy.”
— Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) March 2, 2018
Josh Rosen: “I love football with all my heart & soul... it’s such a complex game and so many things have to go right to win a game because it’s such a team sport.”
— Bruce Feldman (@BruceFeldmanCFB) March 2, 2018
Rosen is set to meet with the Browns tonight.
Baker Mayfield is not lacking in confidence, that’s for sure
Exhibit A:
Baker Mayfield said if there's anyone who can turn around the Browns, it's him. Calls his personality and work ethic "infectious."

Exhibit E:
“I don’t think I’m cocky. It’s not cocky. It’s just confident … I’m not going to go in [the locker room] and act like I’ve got it all figured out.” — Baker Mayfield
— Andrew Mason (@MaseDenver) March 2, 2018
Exhibit F:
Mayfield: Height doesn’t matter. I got three years of tape you can watch. I have fewer passes batted down than other guys here and I’m pretty sure I’m shorter.
— Kate Hairopoulos (@khairopoulos) March 2, 2018
(Going to run out of letters at some point.)
He’s also confident in his former teammate, despite Brown’s disappointing combine:

The highs and lows of the RB 40-yard dash
The leader was NC State’s versatile back Nyheim Hines, whose official time clocked in at 4.38:

Fastest OFFICIAL 40 times for RBs at #NFLCombine2018:
— CollegeFootball 24/7 (@NFLDraft) March 2, 2018
1. Nyheim Hines, NCST, 4.38
2. Saquon Barkley, PSU, 4.40
T3. Kalen Ballage, ASU, 4.46
T3. Rashaad Penny, SDSU, 4.46
5. Derrius Guice, LSU, 4.49
Unfortunately for Ronald Jones, he pulled up while running his 40, coming in at just 4.66. He then walked off the field and will not participate the rest of the day. Jones has been dealing with a hamstring injury for a couple weeks. If he’s not seriously injured, he’ll likely run again at USC’s pro day on March 21.
Bo knows the broad jump
Bo Scarbrough, all 228 pounds of him, put on a show in the broad jump:
Bo Scarbrough broad jump of 11’4 pic.twitter.com/nGv7HWwz16

His official jump was well off that number — but still impressive and still the best at his position:

Saquon Barkley Time!
The best running back in the draft is all ready to make everyone swoon again:
Barkley just jumped 41
— Daniel Jeremiah (@MoveTheSticks) March 2, 2018
That’s just two inches short of the running back record since 2006.
Take a minute to fan yourself after this:

The 49ers and Raiders flipped a coin, wooooooo
And now, the main event: the coin flip between the Raiders and 49ers that determined who picks No. 9 and who picks No. 10 in this year’s draft. ‘
The result: the 49ers won the coin toss, which is no surprise with Jimmy Garoppolo on their side:
the 49ers still haven’t lost since jimmy g became their quarterback. 5 game wins, and a coin toss
— HLJ (@harrylylesjr) March 2, 2018
Also not a surprise: John Lynch declined to say who they would draft at No. 9.
As you can tell, the Raiders contingent was heartbroken:

— Adam Stites (@AdamStites_) March 2, 2018
And Jon Gruden looked like he already regrets his return to coaching:
Here’s a quick refresher on why this happened.
Piesman, represent!
Brian O’Neill, the 2016 Piesman Trophy winner and touchdown machine, turned heads in the 40:
The fastest 40 by any OL today.

: @nflnetwork pic.twitter.com/URVr15jgS7
Quenton Nelson can’t run the 40 and he’s mad about it
Notre Dame guard has been nothing short of impressive so far at the combine. In fact, he could be the best player in the entire draft.
Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to participate in the 40-yard dash:
ND G Quenton Nelson scratched from #NFLCombine 40. Tells me he tweaked hamstring warming up, said he can’t open up. Says he’ll do other remaining drills. Clearly he’s not happy, wanted to do everything.
— Kimberly Jones (@KimJonesSports) March 2, 2018
We doubt that will hurt his draft stock.
Jumpman Jumpman
Who knows if this will boost Kolton Miller’s draft stock, but it’s still dang cool:

Good news for a potential first-round OL
Ohio State offensive lineman Billy Price was injured Thursday three reps into his bench press. He has a torn pec, but luckily it’s not a complete tear:
Billy Price says his pectoral tear is minor and shouldn’t be an issue by training camp
— Adam Stites (@AdamStites_) March 2, 2018
Bad news for a potential first-round OL
Oklahoma tackle Orlando Brown (yes, son of Zeus Brown) hasn’t been lighting it up during workouts:
Orlando Brown going from a lot of money to pocket change fast. 14 lifts yesterday on bench, 5.72 40. Will need strong pro day. #NFLCombine2018

LAMAR JACKSON IS A DAMN QUARTERBACK
C’mon, we’re still doing this?
Multiple NFL teams request for Louisville QB Lamar Jackson to work out as WR at combine, @PSchrags reports https://t.co/4diV2vhKEm pic.twitter.com/qEz0sjHzjN
— Around The NFL (@AroundTheNFL) March 2, 2018
This is not that hard: Lamar Jackson is a quarterback. Lamar Jackson is not a wide receiver.
At least some people get it:
Newsome on Lamar Jackson: “On our board he’s a quarterback.” pic.twitter.com/AkUKzDBIt8
— Nick Shook (@TheNickShook) March 2, 2018
Flames:
LaMar Jackson being asked to work out as a wide receiver at the NFL Combine.

I’d say: “No thank you. Why isn’t Josh Allen working out with the tight ends? I’m good.”
A preview for Friday
The 2018 NFL Scouting Combine started Thursday with some of the off-field interview and workouts getting underway. But the real action will start the morning of Friday as the on-field drills begin.
The first group of players to participate on Day 1 will be running backs, offensive lineman, and special teams players. Some of the bigger names on the RB side who will work out include Penn State’s Saquon Barkley, LSU’s Derrius Guice, and Stanford’s Bryce Love. Barkley was already making headlines before his on-field workouts even began:
Oh boy. Penn St RB Saquon Barkley put on a show on the bench. 29 reps at 225. I think he’ll do OK in the draft.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 1, 2018
Mocking The Draft’s Dan Kadar likes Barkley going No. 2 overall behind quarterback Sam Darnold to the New York Giants:
Barkley may have grown up a New York Jets fan, but he seems to like the idea of playing with Odell Beckham Jr. In the past week the sentiment regarding this choice is that it may not be a quarterback. Bradley Chubb of North Carolina State would be a consideration, but they already have a lot of money tied up in the defensive line. New head coach Pat Shurmur likes to run the ball, and the Giants have little quality at running back. Barkley could be the centerpiece of Shurmur’s offense.
Here’s how to watch all of Friday’s action:
When: Friday, March 2
Time: Coverage starts at 9 a.m. ET
Place: Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis
