Denny Hamlin kicks Darrell Wallace Jr. out of NASCAR rec sports leagues after Daytona 500 confrontation
Denny Hamlin is taking a page out of the Mean Girls playbook.
The ongoing feud between Darrell Wallace Jr. and Denny Hamlin has devolved into something straight out of Mean Girls, with Hamlin now excluding Wallace from participating in a pair of extracurricular activities the two were involved in that included several NASCAR drivers.
Hamlin runs a weekly basketball league (The Hoop Group) and golf tour (The Golf Guys) that features several members of the NASCAR industry. Wallace participated in both groups -- even being part of the championship-winning team in the basketball league -- but he found out his membership was revoked this week after he and Hamlin had a heated conversation following Sunday’s Daytona 500.

Instead of informing Wallace directly, Hamlin used intermediaries, according to Wallace, who says he texted Hamlin but hasn’t yet gotten a response and doesn’t expect to.
“I have been removed from both,” Wallace said Friday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, site of Sunday’s QuikTrip 500. “Although, I didn’t get the direct text; it went through like five or six people. That is classy, I guess.”
Wallace and Hamlin were racing for second place on the final lap of the Daytona 500 when they made contact coming across the finish line, sending Wallace careening into the wall. Afterward, Wallace needled Hamlin saying, “He might need to take some Adderall for that one.” That comment referenced Hamlin telling Barstool Sorts that that 70 percent of Cup Series drivers take Adderall to help them stay focused.
Hamlin would later clarify his remarks, saying he was joking. However, Wallace and Kevin Harvick have both said this week on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio they didn’t appreciate Hamlin’s comments and that other drivers were also angered.
When Hamlin was asked by Fox Sports about Wallace being booted from the basketball and golf leagues after Cup Series practice Friday, Hamlin quipped that “those positions have been filled.” The Joe Gibbs Racing driver also said that any backlash he’s felt over his Adderall comments is something he uses as motivation.
“It just fires me up more to be more motivated,” Hamlin said. “So, I have no issue at all. I’m here to do the best I can to get a good finish and put us in position to do well in the regular season, win some races, get some bonus points. These little bumps in the road are just speed bumps.”
